Generative Questions for Deeper Conversation

One key trend that has come up in many different conversations I’ve had since attending the 2024 Association for Talent Development (ATD) International Conference & Expo in New Orleans, is that in order to evoke learning one must have #curiosity. In a Forbes article from 2023, Executive Coach and Business Development Expert Chelsea Spencer Smith highlighted three key ways Curiosity is good for business. In addition to the creativity it draws from a person and the solution based thinking curiosity enhances, curiosity sets you on a path to learn more about yourself and others in any given situation.

What Are some Tools To Enhance Curiosity?

Coined by David Cooperrider and Suresh Srivastva in 1987, Appreciative Inquiry (AI), is an asset-based approach to organizational and social engagement that utilizes questions and dialogue to help uncover existing strengths, advantages, or opportunities in their communities, organizations, or teams. A large part of the work being done by AI practitioners is to emphasize the positive idea generation, rather than focusing on identifying and “fixing” a negative problem. In order to work through the 5D cycle created in this strengths-based approach, practitioners use generative questions to produce thoughtful conversation, encourage deeper exploration of needs and creative innovation to drive your business goals.

By definition, Generative Questions are the root of this approach which require an individual to go deeper within themselves to invite new ideas, uncover personal feelings while sparking emotion. This is different than asking a fact base question due to the nature of depth one must go in order to bring about an answer. These open ended, multidimensional questions can act as a guide to invite curiosity and a deeper understanding in both our personal & professional conversations.
