Every year The World Happiness Report is an insightful article released by the Wellbeing Research Centre at the University of Oxford, UK, explaining the nuanced happiness at different stages of life. Through this report, powered by thousands of surveys through GALLUP that was released in March of 2024, data shows the youngest generations of the United States rating categorically and historically higher in levels of unhappiness in comparison to their counterpart age groups from years passed.
Through this data, “the young” is defined as individuals under the age of 30 years old who have proven now to reshape the natural curve of where happiness levels have historically shown to rise and fall. This proves that factors such as debt or inflation, social media, the cost of housing, and individual living expenses continue to decline the levels of happiness in some of the youngest professionals across the country.
But how has this continued to change over the past year?
In February of 2025, The State of the Nation Project’s executive report provides several key conclusions under topics of where we as a country remain stable, strengths we are maintaining and areas we are improving, however the key really lies within the nuanced information within each of the four major themes. Those four themes being:
- We are a nation of extremes—extreme successes and extreme failures meaning we are amongst the highest income earning countries, however rate amongst the lowest in mental well-being and inequality
- Our national trends are improving in more areas than we are declining. However, relative to other countries, the opposite is true—we are declining in more areas than we are improving in ways of physical health and civil liberties.
- Our economy is poised for continued success showing that we represent and encourage individual innovation and entrepreneurism.
- Our rising incomes are not translating into greater perceived well-being and social relations. Two of the many factors to this are the rise of material well-being and social isolation that we have seen through the recent years in America. This is highly caused by factors such as the pandemic and social media.
While we continue to work through turbulant times in America, with the seperation of thought and needs, it is our job to work together to take a deeper look into what our individual presence and impact can make on the country.
